Purpose:

The purpose of this research study is to examine the coping resources individuals employ in the face of various stressors. Your efforts are helping us better understand the role of spirituality in coping. We are looking for adults, especially those practicing minority religions, to participate in completing several scales that measure stress and a variety of facets of well-being.

Procedures:

Participation will consist of responding to several checklists and questionnaires relating to your experience, knowledge, attitudes, and behavior.  These instruments include attitudinal surveys, activity checklists, and self-report measures. We will also ask you to provide non-identifying demographic information. Each survey will take between three to ten minutes to complete. The time needed to complete all forms is approximately 30 - 40 minutes.

In completing these materials, please observe the following steps: 1) Follow the directions given on each scale. Please answer the scales in the order they are presented. Respond as honestly as possible. Remember, there are NO right or wrong answers. Each of these scales is asking about your personal perceptions, feelings, and experiences. 2) In answering the questions, work quickly. Do not spend too much time thinking about your answers. Usually, your first reaction to the item is the best response. Answer the questions as best as you can. 3) Try to complete the forms at a time when you will not be disturbed or interrupted.

Risks:

The risks associated with participation in this study are no greater than those encountered in daily life.

Benefits:

There are no direct benefits to you from participating in this study. We hope that your participation in this study may provide insight into the role spirituality plays in resilience.

Voluntary Participation and Right to Withdraw:

Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary. If you decide not to participate, there are no penalties and you will not lose any benefits to which you would otherwise be entitled.

If you choose to participate in the study, you may withdraw from the study at any time. A decision not to participate or to withdraw from the study will not result in any negative consequences for you. If you want to withdraw from the study, simply close the survey window on your web browser.

Confidentiality/Anonymity:

Complete anonymity is guaranteed and no identifying information will be requested. Instead, a code number will be used to ensure that your materials stay together for processing and analyses. Results from your responses will be combined with those from all other participants to provide overall/group results. Consequently, there will be no way to identify the responses of any individual participant.

The researcher may keep the data generated in this study for use and analysis in future studies. Under these conditions, any information obtained from this research may be used in any way thought best by the investigator for publication or education purposes, provided that you are in no way identified and your name is not used.
